Mike Renn, Managing Director, Bougainvillea In Thailand wanted to put forward some of his own words on the design process of such a beautiful and one off design project I was so lucky to be apart of:
Koh Phangan Pavilions is an oasis of eight private serviced apartments nestled discreetly amid towering coconut palms above the picturesque Thong Nai Pan Noi bay on the North Eastern coast of Koh Phangan, Suratthani province, Thailand. Construction started in February 2011 and we received our first guests in December 2013.
I had known of Catherine Lightbody due to a family connection and knew that she had been doing some furnishing and design work in Thailand whilst working for an international furnishing and design house.
Prior to agreeing to help us Catherine spent a great deal of time cross examining us as to our ideas and reasons for even starting the project. What were the thoughts and reasoning behind the size and positioning of the buildings, which market were we targeting, which age group, where did we expect to find our guests, how long did we expect them to stay with us, what did we know about the project management team and had we seen any of the projects that they had previously managed? This ‘mind mapping’ worked and encouraged us to re-visit and re-appraise our ideas and thoughts.
Having decided that we definitely needed her expertise she agreed to visit us on Koh Phangan and worked very hard with the project managers, the carpenters who were hand-crafting most of the furnishings on site and the painting and decorating team. She was instrumental in choosing the stains, colours, paints and other surface materials such as marble and timbers.
Together with Catherine we travelled to Bangkok and Chang Mai sourcing furnishings, carvings and soft furnishings according to her ‘mix and match’ trained eye. Her final work was the choosing of a supplier and the fabrics for the curtains, black outs and blinds for all of the apartments. Here she chose a supplier on Koh Samui, being the larger neighbouring island, realizing that a number of visits for the fitting would be necessary.
Catherine’s input has been invaluable to us and to the harmonious feel that she has created at Koh Phangan Pavilions. The mix of light and airy fabrics with Thai inspired furnishings, wooden and tiled floors, light two toned bathroom tiles, classic bathroom fittings and modern kitchens have been admired and commented upon by many of our guests in their reviews. We thank Catherine for her professional and intelligent guidance.
